Updated 2:41 am, Friday, May 17, 2013
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — How tribes can secure direct funding for foster care will be one of the topics covered during the last day of a summit focusing on Indian child foster care in South Dakota.
The three-day summit finishes Friday in Rapid City.
The summit is bringing together representatives from the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Justice, tribal and state judges, and representatives from tribes in South Dakota Oklahoma, Washington and Minnesota to discuss the Indian Child Welfare Act.
Under federal law, Native American children removed from homes must be placed with relatives or put in foster care with other Native American families except in unusual circumstances.
